The Client Challenge

An organisation of independent tanker owners approached Braemar for advice on carbon offsetting.

Their publicly listed customers were under increasing pressure to reduce emissions. They were introducing chartering policies dictating that their transportation suppliers use transitional fuels like LNG or, failing that, have a net zero emissions policy.

In addition, tanker owners face compulsory regulation in the EU from 2023 with the introduction of the Emissions Trading System. The independent owners needed help in preparing their response.

The Braemar Solution

Braemar offered practical advice and education on how to offset carbon emissions. We executed practice voyages for the tanker owners, estimating the emitted carbon.

We presented the offset options and their costs – from nature-based solutions (e.g. reforestation or preventative deforestation) to tech solutions (e.g. carbon catching) to community solutions (e.g. replacing open fires in developing communities with cooking stoves).

We also introduced the owners to companies who specialise in executing these options.
