Largest ever bulk carrier fixture
of logs from New Zealand

01.
The Client Challenge

The client wished to investigate ways to make the transportation supply chain of timber as efficient as possible. This included maximising delivery loads, which also minimises the environmental footprint from the transportation of logs.

02.
The Braemar Solution

We pitched the idea of using a larger Panamax vessel instead of the usual Handymax/Supramax ships to carry logs from New Zealand to China. The broader market demand for Panamax was suppressed, and Braemar had spotted a window of opportunity.

Previously, Panamax vessels had not been able to load from New Zealand, as the cargo required vessel cranes for loading. One of our brokers was an ex-stevedore with the expertise to facilitate the delivery of mobile shore cranes.

03.
The Result

In the largest ever bulk shipment of logs from New Zealand, 60,000 tonnes of cargo were shipped (conventional loggers carry just 30,000 tonnes per shipment). The client benefitted from significant freight savings compared to conventional logger transportation, as well as a reduced environmental footprint.
